Deadline first reported in August 2024 that Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door had acquired the rights to adapt Matt Dinniman’s smash hit series. Now, Peacock has officially greenlit the project, though a specific release date remains undisclosed. Adding a unique twist, Jeff Hays, the current voiceover talent for the audiobooks, will be stepping into the role of Princess Donut, the series’ iconic Persian cat – a role he’s already expertly embodying.
Dinniman announced the casting at San Diego Comic-Con, where he also revealed the series will be presented as a live-action adaptation, despite initial fan demand for an animated version. ‘It’s kind of funny,’ Dinniman stated, ‘a lot of the more hardcore nerdy fans—I mean, like I am—will say, we want it animated. And then I think actually the majority of people who aren’t into animation are going to say, we want live action.’
The decision hinges crucially on the visual outcome. Fuzzy Door, known for their work on Ted and The Orville, are reportedly prioritizing a visually compelling experience. ‘If you actually poll people out on the street, it’s going to be a pretty high number of live action,’ Dinniman elaborated, ‘But that’s really high risk, high reward, because we’re not going to do it if it’s gonna look like absolute shit.’
Dungeon Crawler Carl began as a self-published phenomenon in 2020, swiftly gaining traction on Amazon. The story follows U.S. Coast Guard veteran Carl, and his feline companion, as they navigate a perilous intergalactic game show. Drawing inspiration from Western RPGs like RuneScape and Fallout, the series has quickly become a defining example of the LitRPG genre. With eight books already released and two more slated for completion, the series’ success demonstrates a surprising appetite for this genre amongst Western audiences. The initial print rights were acquired by Penguin Random House in 2024.
Don’t expect a simple adaptation; Dinniman is aiming for a tone that blends the sharp wit of James Gunn with the underlying mechanics of classic RPGs. Peacock’s investment signals a belief in the series’ potential to capture a significant audience, and Hays’s involvement as Princess Donut promises a seamless transition from the page to the screen.
