Carven shuffles creative leadership amidst revival efforts

The French heritage house, Carven, is navigating another shift in its design leadership. Mark Thomas, who ascended to the role of design director just months ago, is departing the brand at the end of this month. This latest move adds another layer of complexity to Carven's ongoing journey of reinvention following years of turbulence and a change in ownership.

Carven’s recent history has been marked by a revolving door of creative talent. The brand, currently under the umbrella of China’s ICCF Group (formerly Icicle Group), filed for bankruptcy in 2018 before being acquired. Since then, it has cycled through Guillaume Henry (2009-2014), a duo of Alexis Martial and Adrien Caillaudaud (2015-2016), Serge Ruffieux (2018-2020), and Louise Trotter (2020-2024). Thomas’s arrival in 2023 was intended to solidify a creative vision alongside Trotter, with whom he previously collaborated at Joseph and Lacoste. Trotter’s departure last December, after a brief three-season tenure, and Thomas’s subsequent promotion suggested a period of stability – a hope that, it seems, was ultimately short-lived.

Thomas’s initial collections, particularly his Spring/Summer 2026 offering, were lauded for their continuation of the sophisticated, wearable aesthetic he and Trotter cultivated. Vogue noted a clear evolution of the brand’s identity, and Amy Verner of Vogue Runway praised the tank dresses and utilitarian-inspired coats as a modern echo of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's iconic style. But the fashion industry is a fickle mistress, and even promising beginnings can be disrupted.

The statement from ICCF Group offered a carefully worded farewell, acknowledging Thomas’s contribution to the brand's identity and wishing him well. Thomas himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity, specifically mentioning the support of Carven CEO Madame Shawna Tao and ICCF Group president Mr. Ye. He also paid tribute to the brand’s founder, Madame Carven, whose legacy continues to shape the maison's ethos.

What’s next for Carven? The statement vaguely alluded to forthcoming announcements “this year,” with the SS27 show looming. The question on everyone’s mind is whether ICCF Group will once again seek an external appointment or opt to promote from within, a strategy that, as Thomas himself observed before his first show, “There’s no need to break what’s starting to work.” However, given the recent instability, a bold new vision might be precisely what Carven needs to recapture its place on the fashion stage.
