Nolan’s ‘odyssey’ lands with a thunderous performance from morton
Christopher Nolan’s epic reimagining of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ is poised to dominate the summer box office, boasting a stellar cast and, surprisingly, a standout performance from Samantha Morton as the formidable sorceress, Circe.
A powerhouse performance
Morton, known for her intense portrayals, reportedly wasn’t initially drawn to the project solely by Nolan’s name. “What drew me to the project would have been just Christopher Nolan, first of all,” she stated. “However, I came to be in a room with Christopher Nolan—and not only meet him, but get this part and work with him—has just been incredible.” She prioritized the opportunity to collaborate, eschewing immediate concerns about the film’s buzz.
Circe: a force of nature
As Circe, Morton embodies a complex character – young, old, wise, vulnerable, and terrifying – showcasing a remarkable range of emotions. “I got to really flex the acting muscles playing with all of those emotions,” Morton explained. “It’s such a phenomenal role.” The character serves as a significant obstacle to Odysseus’s journey, adding a layer of danger and intrigue to the narrative.
Fashion as a reflection of power
Beyond the performance, Morton’s press tour has been meticulously curated by stylist Karen Clarkson, with each look designed to mirror Circe’s strength and dynamism. Her debut appearance featured a striking gunmetal McQueen gown, referencing the film’s ancient origins. “We needed to do Circe and the part justice,” Clarkson noted. “She is seductive, dangerous, and she holds so much power.”
A visual masterpiece
The McQueen gown, with its fluid movement and organic feel, perfectly complemented the film’s visuals. “It was appropriate for this project, because The Odyssey is the most ancient story,” Morton commented. “I felt so elegant and feminine yet strong in it.” Later, Morton opted for a commanding Bottega Veneta all-black sculptural dress, emphasizing Circe’s regality and warrior spirit – a testament to the garment’s sharp lines and rich texture.
More than just a blockbuster
